The story behind the song that gives this album its title is as follows: During his tour in August 1967, Otis Redding's popularity continued to grow and he found himself besieged by fans at his San Francisco hotel.

Longing for a break, the soul singer accepted an offer from promoter and impresario Bill Graham to spend the night on his houseboat at Waldo Point in Sausalito, California. Inspired, Redding wrote the lines "Sittin' in

the morning sun, I'll be sittin' when the evening comes" for the song "Dock of the Bay".In November he met soul guitarist Seve Cropper at Stax Studios in Memphis, Tennessee, to record the song. Working with him, the

line became a full track, but neither of them could have foreseen the tragedy that would unfold two weeks after the recording session was completed: Redding and his band The Bar Kays were killed in a plane crash on their

way to their next gig. The posthumously released single "(Sittin' On) The Dock of the Bay" became the singer's first and only number one hit and won him a Grammy Award in 1969. The album contained ten more songs and

underlined the fact that Redding was a great talent who had been taken far too soon.
