This is one of the best-selling jazz records of all time, yet it is far less well known among audiophiles than other classics of the genre. Jazz pianist, composer, bandleader and
Grammy nominee Ahmad Jamal has been one of jazz's most successful leaders and one of the genre's great pianists for five decades. His artistry, talent and creativity have
thrilled audiences and won praise from musicians and music lovers alike.
In 1956, Jamal's new trio (with Israel Crosby on bass and Vernell Fournier on drums) performed at the Pershing Hotel in Chicago. Two years later, on 16 January 1958,
the group recorded 'At The Pershing: But Not For Me' in the hotel's lounge. The album remained in the top ten best-selling albums for 108 weeks.
AllMusic gave the album a 4-star rating and described it as a turning point in Jamal's career. At The Pershing: But Not For Me went on to become one of the best-selling
records in the history of Chess Records. Chess Records is synonymous with the Chicago electric blues scene of the 1950s, when legendary names like Muddy Waters,
Howlin' Wolf, Bo Diddley and Chuck Berry became household names and helped establish Leonard and Phil Chess' label as one of the leading exponents of R&B music in America.
It is often forgotten that a jazz pianist named Ahmad Jamal played an important role in filling Chess Records' coffers and expanding its audience.
Born in Pittsburgh, Jamal was a child prodigy who began playing the piano at the age of three and caught the attention of jazz great Art Tatum as a teenager. After moving to Chicago in 1948,
he was discovered by the visionary record producer John Hammond, who had made Billie Holiday famous and later launched Aretha Franklin and Bob Dylan. Hammond gave Jamal his first recording
in 1951, but it wasn't until seven years later, when he was signed to Chess Records, that his career really took off.
We recommend the use of "L'Art du Son" LP cleaner to wet wash your vinyl. Even new records of high quality production will benefit from this.
