Bill Evans’ releases in 1962 were still marked by the tragic death of his friend and trio colleague Scott LaFaro in the previous year. The pianist had withdrawn from the public eye, and his tendency toward self-isolation had only exacerbated his heroin addiction.
It wasn’t until December 1961 that he returned to the studio to contribute to the recordings for Herbie Mann’s album “Nirvana”. Following “How My Heart Sings!” and the ballad album “Moon Beams,” the album “Interplay,” recorded a month later, was Evans’ first
work in which he assembled a larger ensemble around him. For the recordings, he was able to draw on a band of the highest caliber, including trumpeter Freddie Hubbard, guitarist Jim Hall, double bassist Percy Heath, and drummer Philly Joe Jones. Recorded at
the Nola Penthouse Studio in New York City, the album became one of the most significant albums the legendary jazz pianist recorded for the Riverside label.
The master tapes of the original recordings offer breathtaking sound quality, which is why Analogue Productions' LP boxes featuring the 45 RPM versions of the collected Bill Evans Riverside albums were frenetically celebrated by audiophiles. Myles Astor (Positive
Feedback Online, Issue 34) wrote about the completely analogue remastering of the original tapes by Kevin Gray and Steve Hoffman at AcousTech Mastering: "The 45 RPM reissues are more musical and transparent; the instruments have greater three-dimensionality
and the frequency extremes, especially the lower octaves, have higher resolution. Get them before they sell out!“ Fred Kaplan (Stereophile, November 1, 2017) agrees: ”These are, for the most part, exceptionally good-sounding recordings, better than anything else you
can find!" Analogue Productions is now offering this title from the fantastic box set for sale individually: as a 180-gram double LP, cut at 45 RPM. We’d like to warn you that this strictly limited edition will sell out quickly. So don’t wait too long to make your purchase!
We recommend the use of "L'Art du Son" LP cleaner to wet wash your vinyl. Even new records of high quality production will benefit from this.
