One day, Canadian musician Cory Weeds opened an email that read, “Are you Cory Weeds, the tenor saxophonist?” The email was from Kevin Gray, who had worked on several mastering projects for Weed's archival record label “Reel to Real”.

The question seemed strange to him, but he answered in the affirmative. Gray then asked him if he wanted to make a record for him and told a remarkable story: his granddaughter Amber had begun to share his love of jazz music. One day she

saved a track she particularly liked and thought her grandpa would like it too. She played it for him – and he was impressed, indeed. Getting a compliment from Kevin Gray – a man who spends his days remastering Blue Note recordings by legends

like Dexter Gordon, Hank Mobley and Joe Henderson – is incredible. But to make an impression on a college student who is still a teenager? That's something else entirely...

Before Weeds knew it, he was on a plane to Los Angeles with pianist David Hazeltine to record for Cohearent Records – a unique experience, a journey back to the early 1950s: musicians in close quarters, all in the same room, with minimal miking.

There is no separation between the instruments, no processing, and the mixing is done in real time. This setup required a tight and confident band, which was the right time to bring on board bassist Neal Miner and drummer Byron Landham. The weekend

before leaving for Los Angeles, Hazeltine came to Vancouver to perform the material at Frankie's Jazz Club. Working on the music live was a crucial step in making this recording a success for Cohearent Records. Kevin Gray suggested Joe Harley as producer

– another guarantee for albums of the highest quality – both musically and sonically.

“Dig Weeds” is the third, long-awaited album from Kevin Gray's Cohearent Records – a quartet recording that will make fans of Prestige and Blue Note releases lick their lips. The LP, pressed on 180-gram vinyl, also fascinates with its warm and powerful sound as

well as its wealth of detail! Cohearent Records is constantly being asked whether they master directly from analog sources and maintain the analog path to the lacquer. Kevin Gray's answer is unequivocal: “Yes! This is our specialty and we are one of the few places

in the world where it's still done this way!”
