Donny Hathaway's self-titled follow-up to his debut “Everything Is Everything”, released in April 1971, may well be considered the antithesis of a "sophomore slump". With this collection of cover versions, the artist
, who suffered from depression throughout his life, not only demonstrated his talent but also his impeccable taste: Hathaway covered Leon Russell's “A Song For You” from Russell's debut album, which was barely a
year old at the time. Hathaway's passionate interpretation is so strong that many listeners are still shocked when they realize that this song is actually a cover.
With fantastic song interpretations by Billy Preston (“Little Girl”), Mac Davis (“I Believe In Music”) and Van McCoy (“Giving Up”), the record may not have stormed to the top of the charts, but it cemented Hathaway's
reputation as a gifted soul singer and musician. Jerry Wexler (Atlantic Records) took on the bulk of the album production, while Hathaway produced his self-written “Take A Love Song” alone.
The reissue by Analogue Productions is cut at 45 RPM and was manufactured by Quality Record Pressings on 180-gram vinyl. The double LP, released to mark the 75th anniversary of Atlantic Records, comes in a tip-on old style
gatefold double pocket jacket by Stoughton Printing and honors this timeless classic and fascinating musician, who recorded only three albums before his tragic death in 1979.
We recommend the use of "L'Art du Son" LP cleaner to wet wash your vinyl. Even new records of high quality production will benefit from this.
