At the time of their "Tough Tenors" quintet, Eddie "Lockjaw" Davis and Johnny Griffin still had contractual obligations with Prestige and Riverside/Jazzland. They recorded five albums for each label and
"The Tenor Scene" was the first for Prestige. It was recorded during the course of a very productive evening at the legendary Minton's Playhouse in Harlem, which resulted in a total of four albums.
Also released as "The Breakfast Show," this recording gives opportunities for the rhythm section in particular to shine. The bandleaders are consistently convincing with their intense saxophone playing,
which reaches its peak on "Straight, No Chaser."
