Helen Merrill started her professional career at the age of 15. After performing in competitions and theatres, she got a job as a singer in Reggie Charles' band. Merrill, who also became known

as the "Sighs of New York" because of her emotional, sensual vocal performances, produced her first recording in 1952 with the Earl Hines Band. The D'Oro label was founded specifically for "

A Cigarette For Company." This production is also noteworthy because singer Etta Jones was involved as a member of the band."Helen Merrill" from 1954 is the debut studio album of the jazz

singer and to this day her most popular. She is supported by trumpeter Clifford Brown and bassist/cellist Oscar Pettiford, among others. Quincy Jones, then only 21 years old, produced and

arranged the album.
