In 1971, Humble Pie was the opening act for Grand Funk Railroad. The Shea Stadium, the former baseball stadium of the New York Mets, was packed to the rafters, but the weather was not on their side: it was raining heavily and

a storm was brewing – quite literally! It was clear to all the band members that they had to perform at the risk of their lives if they wanted to take advantage of this unique opportunity. Front man Steve Marriott took the microphone and

announced: “It's raining, and we don't give a shit! We'll rock you all night!” The audience went crazy and the band played several encores: Humble Pie had finally conquered America and the starting signal for a mega career had been given.

The band, founded in 1969, had released four albums by then, but “Smokin'”, the fifth long-player by the British, brought the breakthrough – this despite star guitarist Peter Frampton having left Humble Pie right after the legendary Shea show.

Dave Clempson, former guitarist of Colosseum, followed in Frampton's big footsteps and changed the band's sound: “Smokin'” contained a hefty portion of rock 'n' roll bravura – seasoned with deep bluesy roots, lots of soul and, with “C'mon Everybody”,

“Hot ‘n’ Nasty” and the hit single “30 Days In The Hole”, three of the band's most famous songs. Alexis Korner and Stephen Stills also made an appearance on “Smokin'” and helped make the album Humble Pie's best-selling longplayer. “Smokin'” made

it into the top ten in both the USA and Australia, and into the top 30 in Europe.
