Kenny Rankin's musical journey began in New York City: at the age of 21, he started playing guitar and six months later he was already in the studio with Bob Dylan, playing rhythm guitar on “Bringin' It All Back Home.
” With the album “Because Of You,” released on Chesky Records on October 28, 1991, the multifaceted American singer, whose talent knew no bounds, created a lasting monument to himself. Rankin had an incredible
voice, which legendary jazz saxophonist Stan Getz described as “a horn with a heartbeat.” He occupied a unique space where elements of folk, rock, pop, country and jazz came together – he was a musician who blurred
genre boundaries and whose soulful sound defied categorization. In the early 1970s, after moving to Los Angeles, Rankin recorded a series of albums that were highly acclaimed by critics. He played at Lincoln Center, toured
with Manhattan Transfer and sang with the New American Orchestra and numerous community symphony orchestras in addition to his regular club appearances. Stephen J. Matteo of AllMusic wrote about “Because Of You”:
“The album features some of Rankin's best vocal recordings in years, as well as superb sound, making it his best release since ‘The Kenny Rankin Album.’”
For the recordings of “Because Of You,” Rankin, who inspired a multitude of artists to cover songs such as “Haven't We Met,” “In The Name Of Love” and “Peaceful,” gathered a group of top-notch musicians around him: Danilo
Perez (piano), George Young (tenor & soprano saxophone, flute), David Finck (bass), Dave Ratajczak (drums) and Steve Kroon (percussion). Recorded by Bob Katz and immaculately produced by David Chesky and Kenny Rankin,
he album combines pieces written by Rankin (“This Old Man” and “Erienda”) with jazz standards and Brazilian classics. The highlight of the album is Rankin's interpretation of Thelonious Monk's iconic bebop ballad “'Round Midnight.”
“Because Of You” is a unique gem in the Chesky Records catalog, and Evosound is delighted to now present the LP reissue of this wonderful album – pressed on 180-gram vinyl (33 RPM) and, for the first time, using the superior
One-Step process, which brilliantly showcases Chesky's famous production and recording techniques!
