“When I first discovered Maazel's recordings with the Berlin Radio Symphony Orchestra, I was completely fascinated by his unique artistic decisions, especially in Beethoven's Fourth Symphony. At the end of the finale,

the listener feels they have experienced a unique interpretation that is as authentic and inspired as it is organic.” This is how Frédéric D'Oria-Nicolas, the musical treasure hunter at The Lost Recordings, describes his

impressions of Lorin Maazel's recordings with the Berlin Radio Symphony Orchestra. TLR found these previously unreleased recordings, which were made in October 1969 in Studio 1 of Rundfunk Berlin. Maazel was

phenomenally talented. This, coupled with his sheer tenacity and extraordinary resilience, led to a 72-year career with more than 7,000 performances with the world's most renowned orchestras. His repertoire seemed limitless.

In the 1960s and 1970s, when he conducted the Berlin Symphony Orchestra, Maazel proved himself a master of style, a magician of sound who not only had a perfect sense of line and color, but also an infallible technique.

Many musicians feared Maazel's cool authoritarianism and his inability to make concessions. He was relentlessly demanding, first and foremost of himself, and required blind obedience from orchestras and smooth operations

from those in charge. His temperament was legendary. “Little Lorin,” as the former child prodigy was called at the time, was first asked to conduct a professional orchestra at the age of nine, when he was already a violin virtuoso.

When he was eleven, Toscanini invited him to take up the baton of the NBC Orchestra in New York. TLR is proud to present the lavishly restored recording of “The Unreleased Berlin Recordings” – as a strictly limited edition of 3,000 copies

on 180-gram double LP (33 RPM). Sound wizard Kevin Gray himself is responsible for the lacquer cuts.
