This LP is a reissue of a great sounding, once-in-a-lifetime TV event. For a one-hour live national broadcast, CBS brought together 32 of the finest jazz musicians of the swing
era for what was to be the last jam session in a series. The one-hour programme was broadcast live from CBS Studio 58 in New York City on Sunday, 8 December 1957.
The show was hosted by noted TV critic John Crosby and produced by Robert Herridge. Musical consultants for the evening were Nat Hentoff and Whitney Balliett, two jazz critics.
Ryan Smith of Sterling Sound remastered the original 3-track tape found in Sony/BMG's archives, which had probably been unplayed for over sixty years. It features a who's who of
the swing era, including Count Basie, Lester Young, Ben Webster, Billie Holiday, Jo Jones and Coleman Hawkins, as well as younger musicians such as Gerry Mulligan, Thelonious Monk
and Jimmy Giuffre. Columbia Records released this album in 1958 - which was actually a rehearsal for the TV show. The gatefold cover features liner notes by Eric Larrabee.
