The critically acclaimed debut album by Alon Lotringer on LowSwing Records (“In Light”, LOSW006, 2021) was marked by both artistic triumph and profound adversity. Created during the height of the COVID-19 pandemic,

the album emerged under challenging circumstances, yet was widely recognised as a powerful and distinctive work. Tragically, on the very night of its Berlin release concert, a devastating fire destroyed LowSwing Studio, the

home of LowSwing Records, consuming the recording space, master tapes, and a significant number of album copies. It would take Lotringer five years to return to LowSwing and begin work on a new record. The result is a

deeply personal collection of eight songs, reflecting on both intimate relationships and broader world events, capturing a period of reflection, loss, and renewal. At the heart of the album stands Lotringer himself, performing all

vocals as well as bass, guitars, and keyboards. He is joined by acclaimed drummer Earl Harvin (Jeff Beck, Tori Amos, Tindersticks) and Icelandic guitarist Daníel Friðrik Böðvarsson.

Musically, the record continues Lotringer’s signature blend of rock and folk, crafted with a timeless sensibility. For this project, he invited LowSwing founder and producer Guy Sternberg to expand the sonic palette with orchestral

arrangements. Sternberg composed distinctive parts for strings and woodwinds, performed by the renowned ensemble Berlin Session Strings, adding unexpected colour and depth to the songs. In pursuit of immediacy and emotional

honesty, two of the album’s tracks were recorded live directly to master tape, with Lotringer performing alone, bypassing multitrack recording and mixing entirely. The result offers an experience as close as possible to sitting in the room

with the artist. The album is completed by a striking cover artwork: a watercolor painting by famous German artist Martin Dammann.

Like all LowSwing productions, “Phantasmagoria” was created entirely analogue, recorded to 2” tape and mixed down on a Telefunken M15A standing as another pure analogue release from the Berlin-based label. The numbered and

strictly limited 140-gram LP (45 RPM) was mastered at Emil Berlin Studios, cut onto lacquer foil by Sidney Claire Meyer and pressed at Pallas. The booklet contains detailed information about the mixing console, recording equipment,

microphone technique and the effects devices used.

LowSwing Records is a young record label dedicated to the love of music in analog format. LowSwing productions are recorded and mixed on analog tape and then cut directly to vinyl – driven by respect and passion for purist recording

techniques. The heart of the label is the LowSwing Recording Studio in Berlin (www.lowswing.de), where owner Guy Sternberg dedicates himself to exciting new artists with the production values of yesteryear.
