Brazilian bossa nova and pop jazz singer Ana Caram, who also plays guitar and flute, was born on October 1, 1958, in São Paulo. Caram earned a university degree in composition and conducting in São Paulo and moved to New York in the 1980s.
Caram first gained widespread recognition when she performed with the famous Paquito D'Rivera at the JVC Jazz Festival at Carnegie Hall in July 1988. This led to a record deal with Chesky Records, and for her first album she was able to enlist the
Brazilian bossa nova master Antônio Carlos Jobim to collaborate on songs. In June 1992, she performed again at Carnegie Hall at the JVC Jazz Festival. She has worked with various Latin jazz and bossa nova musicians such as Paquito D'Rivera,
Sergio Assad, and Odair Assad. The album “Rio After Dark,” released in 1989, is now considered a bossa nova classic and was her debut album for the audiophile label Chesky Records.
On “Rio After Dark,” Jobim accompanies his protégé on the piano – on Caram's versions of his classics ‘Meditation’ and “Anos Dourados – and contributes background vocals. Another star guest appearance comes from Grammy winner and Cuban-American
saxophonist Paquito D'Rivera, who plays saxophone and clarinet on the tracks “La Cumbia” and “O Que Vier Eu Traço.” Accompanied by pianist, composer and producer David Chesky, flutist Steve Sacks, bassist David Finck and percussionists Carlos Alberto de
Oliveira and Café, Caram demonstrated with her smooth voice and syncopated guitar playing that she is an authentic and wonderful new voice who will continue the glorious tradition of bossa nova. “Rio After Dark” is a very special gem in the Chesky discography,
and we are delighted to present the LP reissue of this wonderful album as part of the “Chesky Original Masters” series: pressed in the superior One-Step process on 180-gram vinyl (33 RPM)!
