Art Blakey - Des Femmes Disparaissent (10" version Mono) / Sam Records

Thanks to his concert at the Olympia on November 22, 1958, and his subsequent performances at Club St. Germain, Art Blakey had become the new hero of the Paris jazz scene. People raved about his “Blues March” and “Moanin’,”

so why not ask him to compose the soundtrack for Édouard Molinaro’s new, just-completed film – “Des Femmes Disparaissent”; in English, “The Road to Shame”? The only problem, albeit a major one, was that time was short, so an

“original” film score was out of the question. Thus, the Jazz Messengers were forced to spread the gospel in a different way. Fortunately, the band’s tenor saxophonist and arranger, Benny Golson, had become an expert at turning the

old into something new, and he did so with equal parts talent and intelligence. Aside from three original compositions, the film’s musical sequences are actually fragments from the Messengers’ repertoire, albeit in adapted form; “Whisper

Not,” for example, can be recognized as “Ne Chuchote Pas.” An extremely daring process… but the result is remarkable!

 “Des Femmes Disparaissent” was recorded on December 18 and 19, 1958, in Paris, France, produced by Marcel Romano, and originally released in 10-inch format on Fontana. The album was later also released as a 12-inch LP and CD

with additional French soundtrack material from the same period, contributed by other jazz artists. For the reissue of “Des Femmes Disparaissent,” Sam Records decided to stick strictly to the original version – both in terms of the 10-inch format

and the original tracklist. To this end, SAM Records commissioned Kevin Gray (Cohearent Audio) to produce the lacquer cuts and Optimal Media in Germany to press the record. The facsimile reissue of the album, limited to 2,000 copies, naturally

comes with the original cover and a double-sided insert featuring an original photo by Jean-Pierre Leloir.
