According to Barney Wilen, he was persuaded to become a musician by his mother's friend, the poet Blaise Cendrars. As a teenager, he founded a jazz club for young people in Nice, where he often performed.
He moved to Paris in the mid-1950s and worked at the Club St Germain with American musicians such as Bud Powell, Benny Golson, Miles Davis and J.J. Johnson. His budding reputation was cemented in 1957
when he played with Davis on the soundtrack of the Louis Malle film Elevator to the Gallows. Two years later, he worked with Art Blakey and Thelonious Monk on the soundtrack to Roger Vadim's "Les Liaisons Dangereuses" (1960).
Barney Wilen is joined on "Inside Nitty Gritty" by organist Emmanuel Bex and drummer Peter Gritz.
