During the recording of her penultimate album, "Lady In Satin," Billie Holiday could hardly conceal her poor physical condition. Alcohol and drugs had given her voice a fragile, rough sound.
But there was still that unmistakable style, the phrasing that had made her one of the most popular jazz singers. And the great emotional depth of her interpretations that she was able to put
into each and every song.Recorded in 1958, this is the last album Holidays released during her lifetime. As usual, the material is drawn from the Great American Songbook. As in her Decca days,
she is accompanied by a lush orchestral arrangement with horns, strings, reeds and even a choir, conducted by bandleader Ray Ellis. It proved to be Holiday's most expensive musical production.
Soloists on the album included Mel Davis, Urbie Green, and bebop trombone pioneer J. J. Johnson. The stereo double LP was remastered by Bernie Grundman and manufactured by Quality Record Pressings.
The gatefold cover contains two LPs at 45 rpm.
