In that wistful, somewhat weird age that was the Thirties, one man almost single-handedly kicked off an era of musical nonsense that provided the entire nation with catchy tunes that could be heard everywhere.

That was Cab Calloway, the 'hi-de-do man' in the cream-colored tails who twirled until he seemed to fly while conducting his band, and who sang slightly crazy ragamuffin tunes with a remarkably rich and full-throated

baritone while recording the biggest hits of his day. The Cab was one of a whole group of 1930s bandleaders who, although he didn't play an instrument himself, gathered a very good band around him and developed

a style all his own. On this album, the Cab recorded a dozen of his greatest hits of earlier years, taking full advantage of the most modern hi-fi recording techniques. In so many ways, The Cab symbolized that whole

era of "Jumpin' Jive," when people needed something that would "make you 6 feet tall when you're only 6 feet tall...".
