“Dr. John's Gumbo” is the fifth album in the discography of New Orleans singer and pianist Dr. John. Conceived as a tribute to the music of his hometown, the album, first released in 1972,
contains a collection of cover versions of important New Orleans classics.
Dr. John, affectionately known to fans as “The Night Tripper”, delivers a strong set list of rousing songs on “Dr. John's Gumbo”, imbued with good vibes and spiced with a dash of Southern voodoo:
Extraordinary interpretations of New Orleans traditionals such as “Iko Iko”, “Tipitina”, “Junko Partner” and “Stack-O-Lee”, as well as contemporary R&B, written or played by artists such as Huey Piano
Smith and Earl King, are the basis for the legendary reputation of the album, which was included by Rolling Stone in its list of “500 Greatest Albums Of All Times” in 2012.
The deluxe version of “Dr. John's Gumbo” reissued by Analogue Productions to mark the 75th anniversary of Atlantic Records should not only please fans of New Orleans music: the 180-gram double
vinyl was manufactured by Quality Record Pressings, cut at 45 RPM and features a lovingly designed, tip-on old style gatefold double pocket jacket by Stoughton Printing – a great addition with high repertory
value for any record collection.
