Jascha Heifetz was one of the greatest, if not the greatest violinist of the 20th century. On this recording, the plays Tchaikovsky's violin concertos with such a degree of intimacy
and enthusiasm as perhaps only he could. Yet Tchaikovsky's work was initially considered unplayable, devastating the Russian composer. Leopold Auer, of all people, one of the
great virtuosos and later Heifetz's teacher, refused to give the first performance of the concertos. It was not until three years after this refusal that Adolf Brodsky took up the composition
and Auer revised his opinion.
