Sonny Rollins - Rollins Plays For Bird (Mono) / Analogue Productions

For "Rollins Plays For Bird," his tribute to alto saxophonist Charlie Parker, Sonny Rollins chose a number of standards he associated with Parker and recorded them within a year of Parker's death.

The first track is a 27-minute medley of seven tunes that flow seamlessly into one another. Pianist Wade Legge, in particular, does a wonderful job here, linking the disparate songs together harmoniously.

Bassist George Morrow and the as always extraordinarily good drummer Max Roach drive the action forward, trumpeter Kenny Dorham, however, keeps in the background.
