Aretha Franklin, Etta James, Carla Thomas... Dusty Springfield's fifth album put the British singer on a par with the great soul/R&B divas of the post-war era – even if she wasn't there from the start.
Released in the US in 1969, the album initially flopped, despite featuring the UK top ten hit “Son Of A Preacher Man” and other high-caliber tracks such as “So Much Love,” “Breakfast In Bed,”
“Just One Smile,” “I Don't Want To Hear It Anymore,” and “Just A Little Lovin'.” It was only years later that “Dusty In Memphis” was celebrated as one of the greatest albums of all time, and in 2001
it was inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame.
On “Dusty In Memphis” Springfield is accompanied by the “Memphis Cats”, who had previously worked with Aretha Franklin, Wilson Pickett, King Curtis and Elvis Presley. The musicians include Reggie
Young (guitar), Tommy Cogbill (bass), Gene Chrismann (drums), Bobby Wood (piano) and Bobby Emmons (organ, electric piano). The songs, written by Randy Newman, Carole King, Gerry Goffin, Barry
Mann and Cynthia Weil, among others, were produced by Jerry Wexler and Arif Mardin (Atlantic) and engineered by Tom Dowd.
Kevin Gray's loving mastering ensures the excellent sound quality of this new edition by Analogue Productions. Cut at 45 RPM and pressed on 180-gram vinyl at Quality Record Pressings, the double LP comes
in a classic Stoughton printing gatefold sleeve – a milestone that should not be missing in any serious record collection!
