Eddie Higgins has long been a part of the American jazz scene, even if he has tended to be overlooked by critics and, to some extent, record companies in his home country. Fortunately,
Japanese label Venus Records has stepped in to fill this gap and has already produced several albums with Higgins. On "Don't Smoke in Bed" he plays in a trio with guitarist John Pizzarelli
and bassist Jay Leonhart. The chemistry between the musicians is immediately apparent on "Close Your Eyes". Duke Ellington's lush ballad "I Didn't Know About You" is often overlooked,
but Higgins turns it into a dazzling gem. His own composition Brown-Eyed Beauty is reminiscent of George Shearing. A wonderful album for jazz fans.
Venus LPs are pressed only once. After the first edition is sold out, the titles are removed from the catalog. Collectors should therefore consider a purchase in time.
