Multi-instrumentalist Eric Dolphy, one of the pioneers of the 1960s jazz upheaval, plays in a quartet with several great musicians on his debut album, Outward Bound: trumpeter (and former roommate of Dolphy)
Freddie Hubbard, pianist Jaki Byard, bassist George Tucker and drummer Roy Haynes. Haynes, who has played with many first-rate artists such as Charlie Parker, impresses throughout the session with his imaginative, intense playing.
Musically, the energetic album moves in a transitional phase between the hard bop of the late '50s and the free jazz of the '60s, and is considered an influential work that inspired such greats as John Coltrane and Charles Mingus.
The album is part of Analogue Productions' prestige stereo reissues, which includes 25 rare and collectible recordings by recording legend Rudy Van Gelder.Recorded at Van Gelder Studio in New Jersey, remastered by Kevin Gray.
