"The Reiner Sound" is an excellent introduction for anyone wishing to learn about Fritz Reiner's work. The recording was made on November 3, 1956 and March 2 and April 13, 1957.
Together with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, the Hungarian-born conductor produces a clear, balanced, rhythmically precise, metrically controlled sound at the highest musical level.
He largely restrains himself from personal rhetoric and lets the compositions of Ravel and Rachmaninoff speak for themselves. Rachmaninoff's "Isle Of The Dead" is an overwhelming
orchestral spectacle with a beguiling dynamic range. Ravel's "Rhapsodie Espagnole" is similarly stirring, glorious and painted in every conceivable acoustic color.
