Harry Belafonte was already playing an important role in the film business at the time of this recording, on April 19 and 20, 1959. So it was easy to sell out Carnegie Hall in New York with his name on it.
What no one was prepared for was the way Belafonte engaged the assembled audience in the music. Seemingly at ease, he also integrated his own band into a 47-piece orchestra. "Belafonte At Carnegie
Hall" is an audiophile gem for those who can also laugh while listening to music. Remastering for Analogue Productions was handled by Ryan Smith at Sterling Sound's studios in New York. The concert is
divided into three parts in terms of content. At the beginning are traditionals of the black American population, followed by excerpts of Caribbean music from Belafonte's youth in Jamaica and finally a wild
mixture of popular pieces from all over the world rounds off the recording. The complete work was released by the RCA label and remained on the U.S. charts for more than three years. It established the
enormous popularity of Belafonte's later live shows.Sonically, the recording is a stellar feat of recording engineering with wonderful vocal reproduction, jumping dynamics and fantastic spaciousness. When
the audience then takes over during Matilda Belafonte's vocal part and the singer takes the liberty of separately inserting individual groups ('And now all those who can really spend money!'), the atmosphere
reaches its peak. Those who still don't sing along now should urgently check their own pulse!
