Alto saxophonist Johnny Hodges was perhaps the most important soloist and sideman in the Duke Ellington Orchestra from 1928 until his death in 1970.
Not only could he hold his own with the best swing saxophonists and interpret the blues masterfully, his fantastic ballads have never been surpassed.
His colleagues on Blues A-Plenty from 1958 were Ben Webster on tenor sax, Roy Elridge on trumpet, Vic Dickenson on trombone, Billy Strayhorn on piano,
Jimmy Wood on bass and Sam Woodyard on drums.
