In February 1963, a few months after the assassination of President Kennedy, Miles Davis played a benefit concert for various civil rights organisations. The live recording was split into two albums: Four & More contains the fast tracks,
while My Funny Valentine contains the slow and medium tempo pieces. My Funny Valentine marks a turning point for Davis. It was the last time he released a live album of standards rather than his own compositions. The recording is
also one of the last with the same band that produced Seven Steps of Heaven.
Davis plays more elegantly and poetically than ever before. Pianist Herbie Hancock, bassist Ron Carter and drummer Tony Williams accompany the trumpeter, but the congenial addition is George Coleman. Subtle and understated, always
with a clear direction and yet flexible, the tenor saxophonist is the ideal partner for Davis.
The remastering for Mobile Fidelity Sound Lab was done by Krieg Wunderlich from a tape copy, as the original master is no longer in the Sony archives. Accordingly, the cover of this edition does not bear the usual 'Original Master Recording' label.
But don't worry - the sound is exceptionally good, as you would expect from MFSL. The 180g 33 rpm double LP is released in a limited edition with a consecutive serial number.
