The set represents the ultimate in Miles' work for the legendary Prestige label from 1951 to 1956, before the brilliant musician moved to Columbia. Miles Davis, who still owed Prestige several albums, fulfilled his contract with the help

of producer Bob Weinstock's relaxed recording approach and his first great quintet – in two marathon sessions on May 11 and October 26, 1956, at Rudy Van Gelder's studio, where they recorded their regular live repertoire with little

rehearsal. Prestige later released the music as “Cookin',” “Relaxin',” “Workin',” and “Steamin'.” The recordings, which were actually only intended to fulfill a contract quickly, became groundbreaking hard bop albums and are among the

most natural, swinging jazz recordings ever made: not rehearsed studio productions, but lively, breathing performances – spontaneous, swinging and electrifying in their interplay. Stereophile named the first edition of this set “Recording

of the Month” in its March 1997 issue and awarded five stars for both the music and the sound!
