Oliver Nelson is known to posterity primarily as an arranger and band leader. When he came to attention with a series of recordings for the Prestige label,

he was celebrated as a leader of small ensembles and a composer who refreshed musical traditions while looking ahead. Screamin' the Blues is excellent

evidence of this: a rousing, funky modern set interpreted by a virtuosic and visionary sextet. Joining them are saxophonist Eric Dolphy as well as Richard Williams,

Richard Wyands, George Duvivier and Roy Haynes.
