Before “Katy Lied”, Steely Dan was a rock band, but with this album they became something else” – that's how most of the US press described the fourth studio album by Walter Becker (bass) and Donald Fagen
(vocals, keyboards), originally released in 1975 by ABC Records. Indeed, “Katy Lied” marks a stylistic turning point for Steely Dan: with more sophisticated and nuanced arrangements and sounds than on their previous
albums, the two musicians laid the foundation for the unique fusion of jazz, rock, funk, R&B and pop that would become the band's trademark.
“Katy Lied” quickly achieved gold status and reached number 13 on the US charts. The single “Black Friday” rose to number 37. Other standout tracks on the album include “Bad Sneakers” and “Chain Lightning”. One of the
defining characteristics of “Katy Lied” is Gary Katz's meticulous production techniques, which included multiple studio overdubs and the use of top-notch session musicians such as Jeff Porcaro, Hal Blaine, and Larry Carlton.
In addition, singer Michael McDonald (The Doobie Brothers) can be heard on a Steely Dan album for the first time. Steely Dan has sold more than 40 million albums worldwide and was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of
Fame in March 2001. VH1 ranked the band at number 82 on its list of the 100 greatest musicians, while Rolling Stone placed Steely Dan at number 15 on its list of the 20 greatest duos of all time.
Analogue Productions now honors this masterful album with a high-resolution hybrid SACD reissue, mastered by the legendary Bernie Grundman, featuring sound quality never heard before.
We recommend the use of "L'Art du Son" CD/DVD conditioner for even more sonic improvement.
