The Cars' second effort, released in 1979, followed the familiar style of their first album to the letter. Poppy rhythms and biting lyrics made it one of the most successful new wave albums, and the LP went platinum within weeks.
The title was an abbreviation of Candy-Obnoxious (i.e. the disgusting candy), and the lyrics deal with women and couples who look wonderfully desirable but cannot save this appearance until daylight.
The cover of Candy-O, which appears on lists of the most famous album covers, was created by illustrator Alberto Vargas. Vargas became famous for his work for men's magazines and drummer David Robinson was a big fan of
these images. Vargas accepted the commission at the age of 80 at the request of his niece, a Cars fan, and worked from a photograph Robinson had taken at a Ferrari dealership in Beverly Hills. Incidentally, the lady in the photo
was actually Candy Moore and had been sent by the record company.
The MFSL Re-Issue will be released as a limited edition 180g LP. The re-mastering was done by Shawn R. Britton and sounds fresh and open, bringing out the beat of the early 80s wonderfully.
