One of the most important jazz events took place in late 1957 at the Five Spot, the popular jazz club in New York's East Village. Thelonious Monk's quartet played there with John Coltrane on tenor sax.
The music Monk made with Coltrane quickly became legendary. Although the group had only been together for six months, it was described as electrifying by those who were lucky enough to hear them play.
The recordings on 'Thelonious Monk with John Coltrane' are more Monk's than Coltrane's - Monk was under contract to Riverside at the time - and include three quartet pieces with Wilbur Ware on bass and
Shadow Wilson on drums, as well as two more from the sessions for the famous 'Monk's Music' album.
