In 1956, drummer Art Taylor formed his own band, Taylor's Wailers, with trumpeter Donald Byrd and tenor saxophonist Charlie Rouse. For their first gig, they were booked directly by the promoter of the legendary
Open Door Sessions, Bob Reisner, at The Pad nightclub on Sheridan Square in Greenwich Village. Two of the highlights are the Thelonious Monk compositions "Well, You Needn't" and "Off Minor" with arrangements
by Thelonious himself. This recording for the Prestige label also features alto saxophonist Jackie McLean. The album is complemented by a session with John Coltrane, Red Garland and Paul Chambers, which can be
heard on Jimmy Heath's "C.T.A.".
