Bill Evans was deeply shaken by the death of the young double-bass prodigy Scott LaFaro (who died in a car accident in the summer of 1961 at the age of just 24) and fell into a deep depression. The magical chemistry of the extraordinary trio, completed by Paul Motian on drums,

had been shattered in the most sudden and tragic way, and the great pianist had slipped into a drug addiction from which there was no escape for him. It was Chuck Israel who encouraged him in 1962 to return to the studio with the ensemble that went down in history as “The Second Trio”

o record two albums: “Moon Beams,” dedicated to a repertoire of ballads, is the first of these. In addition to exceptional interpretations of standards, there are two unforgettable compositions by Evans: the seductive “Very Early” and “Re: Person I Knew,” a piece that would remain in the pianist’s

repertoire until the end of his intense career. Recorded from May 17 to June 2, 1962, at Sound Makers in New York City, the album became an absolute classic of the Riverside catalog.
