Schubert's 'Unfinished' was once considered to be his 8th symphony, and is accordingly labelled as such on this album cover. According to current research, however, it should be classified as his 7th symphony.
The Symphony in B Minor, D 759, was composed in 1822 and it is still a matter of debate among musicologists as to why Schubert did not complete it. The work was initially forgotten until it was discovered by the
conductor Johann von Herbeck in 1865 and then premiered in the Redoutensäle of the Vienna Hofburg. This recording also comes from Vienna, but from 1978, with the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra conducted
by Carlos Kleiber in the Great Hall of the Musikverein
