The collaboration between Carlos Santana and John McLaughlin dates back to 1973. Both were disciples of the guru Sri Chinmoy, and both were undergoing spiritual and musical transformations.
Santana was moving from his rock roots into the realm of fusion jazz, and McLaughlin had become famous as the guitarist of the Mahavishnu Orchestra, but he wanted to take the music in a different
direction from the rest of the orchestra. Together they followed spiritual lines of thought and in fact found a point of entry in John Coltrane, who had gone through a similar phase in the 60s.
The album was marketed as a meeting of two guitar gods, and while this is certainly true, the musical accompaniment to the complex passages should not be forgotten. Larry Young on organ deserves special mention.
Carlos Santana (g), Mahavishnu John McLaughlin (g, p), Khalid Yasin (org), Armando Peraza (cga), Billy Cobham (dr), Don Alias (dr), Jan Hammer (dr), Doug Rauch (b), Mike Shrieve (dr)
