David Wilson had already made several piano recordings when he began his collaboration with Julie Steinberg and David Abel in the concert hall at Mills College (Oakland, California).
However, this was the first time he had recorded a violin on tape. After experimenting with different microphone placements to capture the sound of Abel's Guarneri and Steinberg's Steinway,
he hung his Schoeps CMC-36 from a ladder high above the instruments. He did something that broke all the rules - and was extremely pleased with the result. "Imagine a sound that is so
natural that after 30 seconds you forget it has been reproduced. That's what this recording is," wrote Stereophile in 1984.
David Wilson's highly acclaimed recordings are an audiophile's delight. The head of what is probably the world's most exclusive loudspeaker manufacturer, David Wilson began recording musicians
and music that he himself appreciated in 1977. Always acoustic, always unamplified. For his recordings he used the Wilson Ultramaster, a heavily modified Studer tape recorder with specially designed
electronics by John Curl. Wilson's aim was to get as close as possible to the sound and music he was recording. In the years up to 1995, 33 tracks were created (27 of which were released), reflecting
how Wilson himself prefers to listen to music live.
