As can easily be inferred from Enrico Mainardi’s career, his artistic vision was a fusion of the German cello school – influenced by ‘Neue Sachlichkeit’ – with the musical heritage of his native Italy.
The recordings for this mono cycle, released on the Archiv label, were made in 1954 and 1955 at the Beethoven Hall in Hanover, Germany, and were unavailable on vinyl for a long time. Mainardi’s
playing is contemplative and meditates on the work’s profound significance: a musical delta of courtly low tones, the magical prayer of an old monk. A masterful performance!
The Italian composer and conductor Enrico Mainardi (1897-1976) is one of the most important cellists of the 20th century. Mainardi was born in Milan and studied at the Verdi Conservatory there. At the
age of 13, he made his first public appearance as a soloist. Three years later, his collaboration with Max Reger led to the premiere of Reger's Cello Sonata, Op. 116. Enrico Mainardi later accepted a
professorship at the Accademia Santa Cecilia in Rome. Together with pianist Edwin Fischer and violin virtuoso Georg Kulenkampff, he formed a trio that was renowned throughout Europe. When Kulenkampff
died, Wolfgang Schneiderhan took his place. “Bel canto on the cello” – that seems to be the most apt comment heard after a concert by Mainardi. The sound of his cello is remarkably flexible and warm, almost
like a beautiful voice. Yet every single phrase is perfectly formed. His inspired performance lends something magical to every interpretation.
Analogphonic commissioned Rainer Maillard to process the Universal Music master tapes. The audiophile remastering of this reissue at Emil Berliner Studios does full justice to the recording’s outstanding musical
quality in every respect. The records in the 4-LP box set were pressed by Pallas GmbH in Germany on high-quality 180-gram vinyl (33 RPM).
We recommend the use of "L'Art du Son" LP cleaner to wet wash your vinyl. Even new records of high quality production will benefit from this.
