After leaving Charles Mingus and his ensemble to work with John Coltrane, Eric Dolphy formed a quintet with Booker Little. Over the years it became legendary and a role model for
progressive jazz musicians, even though trumpeter Little died only three months after the recording of "Eric Dolphy At The Five Spot". The post-bop scene admired Dolphy and Little for
their dissonant and atonal sounds, which also attracted the attention of critics. They were accompanied by pianist Mal Waldron, bassist Richard Davis and drummer Ed Blackwell.
Sound engineer Rudy van Gelder used his portable recording equipment to capture the interplay of an extraordinary combo in Cooper Square on 16 July 1961.
