Frequently, alto saxophonist Johnny Hodges recorded albums for the Verve label in the 1950s and '60s. Most of the musicians on "Johnny Hodges With Billy Strayhorn" played in Duke Ellington's orchestra
and the arrangements were written by Billy Strayhorn. But Hodges' playing can only be described as superb, his musical talent emerging more strongly than ever before. Lawrence Brown, Harry Carney and
Howard McGhee also deliver excellent performances. The program includes some of the Ellington Orchestra's best-known numbers. Especially touching are the exotic "Azure" and the emotional "Your Love Has Faded".
