On his sixth studio album, “The Genius Of Ray Charles”, released by Atlantic Records in 1959, Ray Charles for the first time abandoned the soulful sound of his recordings from the 1950s, which combined jazz, gospel and blues.
Instead, the musical genius opted for swinging pop with tight big-band and opulent string arrangements. Concentrated, coherent and masterfully played, “The Genius Of Ray Charles” is rightly considered an R'n'B classic today.
His regular band, some members of the Count Basie and Duke Ellington ensembles, tenor saxophonists David “Fathead” Newman and Paul Gonsalves, trumpeter Marcus Belgrave, and Quincy Jones, who arranged six of the album's
songs in a chart-compatible way, laid the virtuoso musical foundation on which Charles' unique voice could unfold. Especially the ballads like “Don't Let The Sun Catch You Cryin'”, “Am I Blue” or the touching “Come Rain Or Come Shine”
are guaranteed to give you goosebumps!
