'5 by Monk by 5' was deliberately conceived and realised as a quintet album. The 'five' consists of what was Monk's regular working quartet at the time of the 1959 sessions, plus Thad Jones.
It is therefore a well-rehearsed unit, complemented by a distinctive additional voice. The album contains two new compositions by Monk and arrangements of three earlier pieces. The quintet
consists of Monk (piano), Thad Jones (cornet), Sam Jones (bass), Art Taylor (drums) and the amazing Charlie Rouse (tenor saxophone), who begins a very fruitful collaboration with Monk here
and who really adds a lot with his incredible tenor playing, which is as edgy and modern as Monk's work demands.
