When a singer in the USA wins a Grammy for Best New Artist after her sixth album and years of wandering between country, southern rock and pop, then something has gone very wrong.
When that singer then goes on to record an album inspired by Dusty Springfield, there is a big question mark and only one person who could turn it into an exclamation point. That would be
Springfield's producer Phil Ramone, who took Shelby Lynne into the legendary Studio A at Capitol Records in Hollywood to record an unexpectedly serene and sonically magnificent album.
Shelby Lynne doesn't sound like she's trying to imitate Dusty Springfield, and fortunately she stays away from Son of a Preacherman. Instead, she takes songs and gives them a 2008 perspective
- and these are no worse than the British originals in their quieter version. The sound is that typical 60s studio sound where you always think Frank Sinatra is about to sing a duet, but with the
technical possibilities of a state-of-the-art studio. Even the microphone used on Shelby Lynne gives the impression that it came from the sixties and has seen the vocal cords of all kinds of stars up close.
This is one of the few albums where you can hear that something big is about to happen as soon as you turn on the mixer. The space between the speakers opens up and within moments any newcomer
will realise what high end is all about. We have a presumptuous ambition to bring a special experience in a strange place into your home, and very rarely do we succeed in doing so as well as we have with
this recording. So if you occasionally get the feeling that this whole high-end thing is overdone: Listen to this album and all doubts will be removed.
