With their fifth album Heartbeat City, released in 1984, The Cars released one of the most seminal pop albums of the eighties, achieving their greatest commercial success and finally making them superstars.
The band's music videos certainly played a part in this success. With the meteoric rise of MTV, videos had become an important marketing tool, and The Cars were one of the first bands to make clever use of
the new medium. The Boston group released several imaginative clips for their five singles from Heartbeat City, all of which reached the top of the charts.
The most successful of these were Drive and You Might Think, the video for which was highly acclaimed and won MTV's first Video of the Year award. Thanks to the clever songwriting of band leader Ric Ocasek
and the perfect production of Robert John "Mutt" Lange, it is easy to imagine all the tracks on the album as singles, as Heartbeat City contains ten great, catchy songs that, unlike many other productions of the time,
do not sound dated or outdated.
Remastered from the original tapes by Krieg Wunderlich for Mobile Fidelity and pressed by RTI, Heartbeat City is available as a limited edition 180g vinyl LP with consecutive serial numbers.
